It took a three-hole playoff to determine this year’s Jamieson Junior Golf Tour girls champ, but in the end, Laura DeMarco’s steady putter helped her collect her second straight crown on Monday.
Going into the tour’s final event with a slim one point lead over Kingsville’s Alyssa Getty, DeMarco seemed poised to win the overall championship by shooting a 77 at Beach Grove. Getty, however, was not going to surrender without a fight.
The 13-year-old tour rookie shot a 76 to win the final stop and tie DeMarco in the overall points race to force a three-hold playoff.
DeMarco collected three straight pars to seal the championship and win for the second consecutive summer.
“It’s really cool to win in it for the second straight year,” Demarco said. “It was really close between Alyssa and I all season long.”
While DeMarco was able to cruise to the title last year, Getty made her sweat for it this time around.
Both golfers took three stops on the tour, with DeMarco winning at Erie Shoes, Essex and Links of Kent.
Getty was victorious at Ridgetown and swept the final two stops at Sutton Creek and Beach Grove.
“She’s a great player,” DeMarco said of Getty.
“She has a very good short game and makes a lot of very important putts.”
DeMarco said the conditions at Beach Grove made it a little more difficult to win the championship.
“It was my first time playing there in a while, but the course was in great shape,” she said. “It was really windy, but I played through it.”
Along with securing her second crown, DeMarco kept the winning tradition alive in her family. Jackie DeMarco, Laura’s older sister, grabbed three straight championships from 2006-2008 when the tournament was still known as the Burger King Junior Golf Tour.
“It’s great to keep it going,” Laura said. “Hopefully, I can win it for another two or three more years.”
On the boys side, Doug Hoppe was able to hang on to the overall championship despite not playing the tour’s final stop.
Hoppe, who went back school at Iona College in New York where he is on a golf scholarship, won the title after second-place Quinn Vilneff failed to finish in the top four at Beach Grove.
Hoppe won a stop at Sutton Creek, finished second at Erie Shores and third at Sutton Creek — good enough for 231.5 points and the overall crown.
Vilneff, who shot a 73 to finish sixth at Beach Grove, finished 11/2 points behind Hoppe in the title race.
Crawford McKinlay fired a three-under 68 to take the final stop at Beach Grove.
Defending champion Michael Pinsonneult of St. Joachim, who missed the final event, had 212.5 points to finish eighth in the over standings. |
